The National Pulse: 2 Reasons Why DeVos’ Education Reform Plan Would Be a Disaster

Charter school and voucher expansion have been a hot topic across the nation at both the state and federal levels. Interest and grave concern about this expansion, especially at the federal level, has intensified from all points on the political spectrum in light of several recent developments: Florida’s bill serving as a trial run, the release of President Trump’s first federal education budget, Secretary DeVos’ recent testimony and speech, and the Jeb Bush-led promotion of these ideas.

Dr. Karen Effrem examines 2 reasons DeVos education reform would not work.

  1. Increased government tentacles into schools.
  2.  Charter Schools do not improve students performance.

The National Pulse: The Student Data Grabbers Are Back At It Again

The bureaucrats and technocrats who see education as mere workforce preparation and who are devoted to monitoring, tracking and slotting free-born American citizens from womb to tomb in order to create their vision of a planned economy are continuing their dystopian efforts with a new bill.  S 1121, the College Transparency Act.

This bill is supported by all of the usual data grabbing suspects that see students merely as links in the labor market supply chain and education merely as workforce skills development. This includes the Workforce Data Quality Campaign, The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable.

Dr. Karen Effrem addresses the frightening ramifications of a “brave new world” outlook.

Large national organizations like the National Association of State Boards of Education and the American School Counselors Association have already admitted that one of the main purposes of the Common Core standards and the aligned testing is to mold and profile students’ attitudes, beliefs, and behavior — through what’s called social emotional learning (SEL) or “21st Century Skills.” Can we as a nation, continue to survive as a constitutional republic, if our children are being deemed worthy or not through a “brave new world,” outlook?

The National Pulse: There He Goes Again: Jeb Bush Still Interfering in Education

Dr. Karen Effrem’s recent Florida Legislative testimony bears witness to sound advice falling on deaf ears.

“This would be especially tragic for our already beleaguered school districts, because this concept of tying NAEP proficiency to state test achievement levels has NO, and I repeat NO support in the government and research communities. The National Center for Education Statistics that administers the NAEP, as well as the National Academy of Sciences, The National Academy of Education, and the Brookings Institute all say that proficiency on the NAEP and achievement levels on state tests like the FSA are completely unrelated and should have nothing to do with each other.”
